Masjalizah Hamzah and Toni Kassim are organising a program for World Press Freedom Day including a Concert on Sunday 5th May (more info below). It would be good to have some participation from the arts community at the Concert. If you would like to support this event, pls contact either Toni Kassim (2274 2590 or 017 8732795) or Masjaliza Hamzah (79671388 ext 1839 Star or 019 2215334) Pressing for Freedom

World Press Freedom Day celebration.

World Press Freedom Day falls on May 3 and this year will see an unprecedented number of activities carried out by different groups and organisations.

Among them are forums (one jointly organised by AIDCOM and the Malaysian Press Institute and another jointly organised by the Bar Council Human Rights Committee and the National Union of Journalists), handing over a memorandum to Suhakam by journalists and a sketch by Chinese writers about the Nanyang takeover and some other activities organised by them later this month. There will also be press conferences held on the day itself.

As part of the celebration, a group of journalists are planning to hold a concert on Sunday May 5. The whole idea is to use the day (and the month) to not only reflect on the state of the press in Malaysia and the rest of the world and discuss issues concerning Press Freedom, but also to celebrate the day with music, words and action. It'll be a good platform for journalists from different types of media and those who are concerned with press freedom to meet and celebrate that day.

Groups that have confirmed are Farmhouse (a lo-fi four-piece indie band), Mojo Pin (made up of at least three journalists; Mojo Pin will play an acoustic-type set), Jerome (singing), Eddie (an Achehnese who will sing and talk a little about life in Acheh). There'll possibly be other small acts (a new acoustic group made up of two journalists and a women's activist and a Christmas carol to remember what happened at the Sun).

Malaysiakini will put up a mobile wall of all the publications in Malaysia that have been banned. There'll be a table selling pins, bumper stickers and such, petitions to endorse, e-mail discussion lists to join, etc.

The programme will start at 6pm and ends 11ish.
