Just four weeks to go until Sydney becomes FABULOUS!
With just under four weeks to go until the Sydney 2002 Gay Games kick off, organisers today unveiled another component of the “fabulous” Opening Ceremony at Aussie Stadium on Saturday 2 November. Games organisers also announced that Tina Arena, one of Australia’s most successful pop exports, will join the performer line-up at the closing party, Farewell, on 9 November.
Director of Ceremonies Ignatius Jones announced the running order of the Opening Ceremony, which will see the 13,000 Games participants become an integral part of the performance, an innovation that will allow them to see the entire Ceremony. The order of the Opening Ceremony segments is:
1. Prelude
2. Parade of Heroes
3. Welcome to Sydney 2002
4. Struggle: Persecution & Perseverance
5. Remembrance
6. Acceptance, Love & Pride
7. Celebration: Under New Skies
8. Official Opening
9. Finale
“With kd lang, Jimmy Somerville, our amazing line-up of Australian artists, more than 2,000 volunteer performers, 13,000 participants and 38,000 audience members, the Opening Ceremony is going to be one epic event,” Jones said. “Rehearsals and set and costume construction are well underway at our workshop in Newtown, and after all those months and months of planning it is truly humbling to see it all come together.”
Arena joins previously-announced Farewell performers, nineties pop princess Melissa Tkautz, Sydney boy Michael Nicolas, and lesbian soul goddess Shauna Jensen.
“I’m honoured to be asked to perform at the Sydney 2002 Farewell Party,” Arena said. “The last time I performed at a gay event was here in Sydney in 1997, and I had an amazing time. I’m thrilled to be performing ‘Symphony of Life’, which I think couldn’t be a more fitting way to bring down the curtain on what is going to be an amazing week of sport, culture and fun.”
Sydney 2002 Party Director Gary Leeson said Arena’s profile in Australia, Europe and the US made her the perfect act for Farewell, which will be the last opportunity Gay Games participants have to say to goodbye.
“Tina is unique; a truly versatile artist who has conquered live performance, theatre, pop music and television,” Leeson said. “She has a voice from heaven and I’m incredibly excited that she will be lending her amazing talent to our final night of celebration.”
Opening Ceremony – Saturday 2 November, Aussie Stadium
Farewell – Saturday 9 November, Royal Hall of Industries, Hordern Pavilion, Fox Studios
