Mission Statement
The Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC) and the Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) are committed to creating an environment free from the negative impact of HIV/AIDS for Malaysia and her peoples, through and with its affiliates by strengthening, mobilizing and representing them.

MAC Objectives
Together, MAC's vital fronts in the fight against HIV/AIDS are

  • To ensure a committed and effective NGO response
  • To prevent the spread of HIV
  • To ensure the highest possible quality of life for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS
  • To promote and protect human rights as they relate to HIV/AIDS
  • To eliminate discrimination, stigmatisation and prejudice related to HIV/AIDS

MAF Objectives
As the fundraising arm of MAC, the Foundation seeks to raise funds for programmes which

  • Prevent the spread of HIV in Malaysia
  • Educate the families and friends of People Living with HIV/AIDS, the Malaysian public, and Malaysian national and local authorities in matters relating to HIV/AIDS
  • Support programmes which help Malaysians who are infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS
  • Protect the human rights of people in Malaysia who may suffer discrimination due to their HIV status

The Council & The Foundation
In 1992, an initiative by the Ministry of Health brought HIV/AIDS-related NGOs under one umbrella in order to maximise their efforts and to ensure that limited resources were used as efficiently as possible. Thus the Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC) was formed.

The Malaysian AIDS Council
MAC is a non-profit organisation that has expanded over the last ten years from a two-person clerical staff to over 20 employees. MAC is administered by an Executive Committee (ExCo) comprising of ten elected representatives from our affiliate organisations. The ExCo governs all policy-making decisions and oversees the strategic direction taken by the organisation.

The Malaysian AIDS Foundation
Officially launched in February 1993 by DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Bainun, The Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) is the fundraising and grantmaking arm of MAC. Its primary objectives include raising, receiving and administering funds which are channeled to run programmes in line with MAC's objectives. MAF is administered by a Board of Trustees comprised of five members of Malaysian society and five representatives from MAC. MAF receives donations from various corporations and public individuals who want to support our efforts.

ICAAP 1999
In recognition of its capabilities and determination, MAC was the first NGO to be given the task of organising the Fifth International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP). ICAAP is a biennial event and is one of the most important congresses on the world calendar for the gathering of ideas on HIV/AIDS. The Fifth ICAAP was held in Kuala Lumpur on 23-27 October 1999 with the theme " The Next Millennium - Taking Stock and Moving Forward".

Services

Coordinating NGO Efforts & Capacity Building
The MAC streamlines the work of its 34 Affiliates by eliminating unnecessary duplication of work and programme overlap. We also provide them with the necessary training, materials, funds and resources to implement effective HIV/AIDS programmes within various communities in Malaysia.

Advocacy
As one of the main contributors to government policy on HIV/AIDS, MAC presents the views of our Affiliates and the concerns of Malaysians living with HIV/AIDS to the government. We have a seat in the National Coordinating Committee on AIDS and hold an annual dialogue with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of National Unity and Social Development.

Our Law, Ethics and Human Rights subcommittee reviews laws in Malaysia that could hinder or assist the management of the epidemic. As a result, the Malaysian AIDS Charter was published in 1995 setting out the rights and responsibilities of all sectors of society in relation to HIV/AIDS.

Prevention Education
MAC actively promotes education on HIV/AIDS in order to prevent the further spread of HIV in Malaysia. Our education efforts consist of workshops, talks and forums in a variety of settings, public exhibitions, as well as mobilization programmes during International AIDS Memorial Day and World AIDS Day. These are further supplemented by the outreach and peer education programmes of our Affiliates.

Malaysian AIDS Council Resource Centre was established in 1995 as a clearing house to collect and disseminate all available information on HIV/AIDS in Malaysia and around the globe. The Centre also acts as a research library for young people and professionals.

Care, Support And Treatment
In addition to helping facilitate affiliate programmes such as halfway houses, drop-in centres and support networks, MAC itself provides direct assistance to People Living with HIV/AIDS via its Outreach Programme and the Treatment Information Project. Through MAF's special funds, direct financial assistance is given to HIV infected and affected people, including children.

.::INTERVIEW WITH WRITER FIRE SIA ::.

AGE : 25
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN : Philippines
OCCUPATION : writer/artist

ABOUT WRITING AND YOURSELF

Tell us a little bit about yourself ?

I love the company of friends and activities that stimulate my mind and make me think. I enjoy movies, plays, watching and directing (small) musical productions, as well as painting and music.

Tell us a little bit about your childhood and how it has influence your work and what you are now ?

A number of the stories I tell in my writing reflect the kind of childhood I had. Some are not necessarily my experiences though I may write them from a narrators point of view. These are stories I've heard from childhood friends or actual events that I have witnessed. In cases like this, I put a personal touch in each story I write by trying to put myself in the main characters' shoes and by imagining the events that transpired as if they had happened to me. I enjoy writing about my past specially the silly things I did and others did when they were young. I think it's very nice to go back into your own childhood to see and try to answer your own questions and listen to your own insights.

How long have you been a writing ?

I've been writing since January 2000, almost two years now.

What inspires you to write ? Is it from personal experiences ?

I am greatly inspired by personal experiences that I would never want to forget and ironically some, I would want to remember only once.

What / who is your greatest influence ?

The "who" in my writing career will always be that one woman who is constantly teaching and guiding me through my writing career as well as being my very loving and caring companion.

What is the most unforgettable moment in your career?

The very start of it, when I wrote my very first article for a webzine.

In your opinion, what makes an article great?

I think that an article is great when readers can relate, feel and understand the writers emotions, passions and more importantly, message.

What does it takes for a lesbian writer to succeed in this industry ?

It takes a lot courage to speak out about yourself and others like you. Courage laced with responsibility, sensitivity to others and dedication to a cause are essential factors of success. You must be willingly understood before you can really put your message across.

How do you compare yourself to other women writers ?

I don't feel like I can compare myself to others, many womyn writers are extremely talented and experienced. We all have our own styles of writing as well as topic specialization. Style wise though, I feel that I try to talk to my readers as casually as possible even when I talk about sensitive and debatable issues. I try to be sensitive to everyone's point of view as well as say what I believe and think.

Career Highlights ?

Writing a column for Fridae.Com

What book are you currently reading now?

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Who's your favourite author and your favourite literature ?

I like a number of authors, a mixture of classical and modern literature writers. Among these are Jeanette Winterson, Amy Tan, and Alexandre Dumas. Recently I have developed a liking for J.K. Rowling as well.

What is your favourite quote ?

"...love will come to you hoping just because i spoke the words that they're true as if I've offered up a crystal ball to look through where there's now one there will be two." - Indigo Girls

ON PERSONAL LIFE

Are you single or attached?

Seriously attached.

If the government decided to legalize gay marriage, would you marry your girlfriend (if you're attached and gay)?

Yes!!

Favourite pick-up line?

"That's a nice dress, so who are you with tonight?"

How do you define beauty ?

Beauty is best when discovered through time.

What is 'love' ?

Love is the most inexplainable phenomenon in this world. It is sweet and tender at it's start and peak but at times could end as bitter and painfull as death.

FAMOUS LESBIANS AND GAY COUPLES
It is a popular myth that same-sex relationships don’t last. Our Partners National Survey of Gay & Lesbian Couples gives us data to the contrary. This list of well known couples — some from ancient times, others more recent — suggests the reality of committed couples, and the roles that partners plays in each other’s lives and, in some cases, each other’s work.
